One thing I quite enjoy about this class is that as students, we are learning how to conduct research on our selected topics, properly speak and inform an audience during presentations, and be a part of the audience and be informed on important topics. Especially at this time, it is crucial to be informed and step out of our comfort zone. This project tackles topics such as education, the environment, immigration, and healthcare; it has helped further educate ourselves and raise awareness among our peers.          Group one spoke about immigration and the everyday challenges they face in the United States. Besides my group, I enjoyed their presentation a lot because immigration in the United States is currently active in a negative manner. Immigrants contribute to the country, and they're a part of the reason why the country is very diverse. They contribute to jobs, establishing and further expanding cultures, and overall...

Recently, I had the chance to listen to several presentations that covered a wide variety of topics. At first, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Many of the subjects sounded familiar — ones I had already heard about through the news, social media, or everyday conversations. I thought I already knew what people usually say about them. But hearing about these topics through personal stories, research, and different perspectives turned out to be much more interesting than I anticipated. Each presentation helped me see how deeply these issues connect with one another and how they shape people’s lives in ways we sometimes take for granted. By the end, I found myself thinking a lot about how families adapt to change, how health care impacts everyone differently, how education can transform futures, and how immigration ties all of those things together. Listening to all these presentations reminded me that these are not just separate issues — they are deeply human experiences that overla...

In this project, I got to learn a lot about real-life issues that people struggle with like immigration and healthcare for example. Conducting my own research on the history of healthcare really allowed me to acknowledge how far healthcare has evolved from the ancient times when there was nothing known about sicknesses and how to treat them to now where there have been tons of technological advancements in medicine. I also enjoyed listening to all the information from my classmates, especially the interviews conducted. I think they were interesting to hear from people who have a lot of knowledge and experience on a topic because they’ve seen or lived it.       Group 1 focused on immigration and what they have to face. This topic was one of the most relatable ones for me even though I was born in the United States. I come from an immigrant family and I know a lot of immigrants who had to go through a lot to get to where they are. They talked...
Blog 2 Daniel Alvarez  All the groups of our class did an excellent job during their presentations, and each topic taught me something valuable about the world we live in. But the one that really touched my heart was the Immigration presentation, maybe because I can relate to it personally. I know how it feels to move to a new country, to adapt, to start again, and to see how hard families work just to have stability. The Immigration team didn't just talk about laws or statistics; they made it real by talking about what people go through emotionally. Their presentation really resonated deeply with me because I've seen those struggles firsthand, and it reminded me so much of our topic, Health Care and Families, since both deal with human challenges, resilience, and how important support is when life gets complicated. The Immigration group began by explaining why people leave their countries in pursuit of a better future due to poverty, a lack of opportunity, violence, and othe...

The group project that I’ve recently done for this public speech class has really informed me on how to approach a speech for the future. This is a skill that I think everyone should value because it really does help with social anxiety and learning to be more comfortable. Whether it be a speech for school, a presentation at work, or at a community event, learning these skills is valuable. In the beginning, I was worried about my group being unresponsive and having to do everything because this had happened to me in the past. However, everything has gone pretty smoothly so far. In this blog, I’m going to be reflecting on the group presentations that were done recently. Everyone in the groups seemed knowledgeable and confident in the topic they were presenting. I learned a lot of different tips from listening to everyone and even from my chapter.       Group 1 talked about various things such as the importance of public speaking in society and how ...

Before the fall semester started, I thought this class was briefly going to be about how to present and speak professionally for any job opportunity in the future. I thought my only worry for this class would be the people in my group not following along and having the stress to do almost everything myself. I am partially correct; this class is about speaking in a professional tone although, it made me realize that it is more than that. It is also how to conduct proper research, how to talk to my peers about the work (which is something I'm not completely used to), and of course talking confidently in front of a crowd. This realization came to me when my classmates presented each of their own presentations about how to get ready for a successful presentation. One thing that each of my classmate's presentation had in common, mine included, was enabling the skill of talking confidently in front of a crowd. This includes limiting unnecessary, "filler" words such as ...

Learning About Public Speaking

Each chapter taught, had its own main points and objectives, which is good since, I mean, they should. I will say that the way the chapters were laid out was helpful in seeing how many different parts go into public speaking. At first, you would think it is just about getting in front of a group, communicating your ideas, and then sitting down. But after going through the material, it’s clear there is a lot more that goes into it. There are things like knowing your audience, preparing your outline, organizing your ideas, practicing your delivery, paying attention to nonverbal communication, and even just learning how to breathe and calm yourself before stepping up. All those things sound so small, but when you put them together, they are the difference between someone stumbling over their words and someone being able to deliver a message clearly and with confidence. One thing that really stood out to me, while learning all of this, was how important practice really is. I know people al...
